Silver Lake and Central Farm History

In 1939 the Provincial Government set up and ran Central Farm to assist the people of Green Lake with employment and training. In 1996 the Government gave Central Farm to the Northern Village of Green Lake, and Silver Lake Farm is owned by Northern Village of Green Lake. From 1997 to present, the Northern Village of Green Lake has run the two farms with the help of the Green Lake Metis Farm board. Both farms are operated as a community pasture creating jobs locally. Central farm consists of 9000 acres, 10% of which is alfalfa. Silver Lake consists of 3649.2 acres of grazing land (Alfalfa/Brome mix), and 1485.7 of Hay usage.

The renovations and cleaning of the farm yard and corrals were a major task and was a costly endeavor that took a few years to brink back up to a standard but with the hard work of the Manager and a few employees the farms are in great shape. The community owns 417 Cows, 140 calves and 24 Bulls of their own that partly fill the Central Farm pasture land. As well the pasture lands have been filled to capacity every year with cattle from other ranchers that are very happy with the service we provide.
